Brakes

Our expertly trained service technicians repair or remanufacture to original factory specifications.

Disc & Caliper Style Brakes

The disc and caliper design features opposed pistons for balanced braking. The symmetrical split construction accommodates discs of any thickness and permits mounting from either side or at the split line. This brake type is ideally suited for most stopping and light tensioning applications such as: Conveyors, flywheel brakes, mining vehicle brakes, railroad maintenance equipment, tension brakes. An automatic adjustment mechanism compensates for lining wear and maintains constant release clearance and response time.

Our brake types are capable of frictional force capacities up 2540-5,300 lb·in, 11.300-23.600 N·m per caliper.

Industrial Clutches

Our clutches are designed to withstand severe applications mounted to internal combustion engines. The drive rings will fit standard SAE industrial flywheels. Heavy duty laminated gear teeth friction discs are designed to withstand heavy shock loads and torsional vibrations. Clutches are balances to their maximum speeds.

Power Take-Offs

The Power Take-off is suitable for inline and sideload applications on all internal combustion engines with standard SAE flywheel housing dimensions. All PTOs and parts are 100% interchangeable with existing PTOs. All units are supplied with sealed ball pilot bearings to eliminate lubrication problems normally encountered. Ball bearing throw-out collars are optional on 14" units and standard on 311 units. Please pay close attention to certain application criteria including speed, side load and clutch torque.

Hydraulic P.T.O.'s

Actuated with hydraulic pressure and internal components immersed in oil, this line of clutches and brakes is ideal for applications that require high cycle rates and or high speeds.

The oil film aids in transmitting the torque until the unit is fully engaged. The heat generated during engagement is transferred to the oil and is transmitted away from the working surfaces by the circulating oil.

Features of hydraulic units are:

  • Long component life, wear is virtually non-existent
  • Maintenance intervals increased by a factor of 5 to 10 times
  • Low driven inertia
  • Faster response speed
  • Higher cyclic rates and operating speeds than standard air actuated dry running units

Mechanical P.T.O.'s

Mechanical P.T.O.'s are powered by a 2-plate clutch. Built-in damping springs on the clutch; driven discs and no pilot bearing are some of the standard features that make mechanical P.T.O. user friendly when applied in the harsh environment of diesel engines.

Pneumatic P.T.O.'s

Manitowoc Torque Converter

Type 4 Converters

Designed specifically for the oil and gas industries, these units transfer power from diesel engines and electric motors up to 2610 kW (3500 hp). Offered in 20, 22, 26 and 34" circuit sizes, these converters provide higher torque multiplication and utilize prime mover power over a greater operating range than previous torque converters used in oil field applications.

3 Stage Converters

Three-Stage Torque Converter design-incorporating three rings of turbine blades and two sets of reactor or stator blades-develops a very high torque factor-up to five times engine output torque when at stall. Our products are rated for applications up to 335 hp at 2400 rpm; the Standard-Duty 11,500 Series to 420 hp at 2200 rpm; the Heavy-Duty 11,500 Series to 580 hp at 2200 rpm.

Applications and Selection of Torque Converters

The purpose of this page is to provide a rough guide to help you select a torque converter based on net input horsepower and speed. However, a converter must also be matched to the characteristics of the driven machine and other factors such as stall torque ratio, engine lug, braking and cooling as well as other considerations. Contact our qualified staff for assistance with torque converter recommendations. Please be ready to provide information about your engine including net horsepower and governed speed, the characteristics of the driven machine and the performance expected under stipulated average and maximum conditions.

Torque Converter Selection Chart - Speed

Application Information

The impeller of the converter is a centrifugal pump and must obey the following basic laws:

  1. Input torque varies with the square of the input speed.
  2. Input horsepower varies with the cube of the input speed.
  3. Input horsepower varies with the fifth power of the diameter of the impeller.

To handle a complete range of engines from 40 to 1000 horsepower, most manufacturers such as Link Belt, Manitowoc and Twin Disc, make four size series of three-stage converter. In each series, there are torque converters available with different specific torque ratings, each covering a portion of the broad capacity range per series. This enables you to match the converter exactly to the engine to fully utilize the available horsepower. Separate specific torque ratings within a series are obtained by using a choice of four different impellers and, in certain applications, by using long third stage turbine blades.

Specific torque ratings (called MS Ratings) designate the torque capacity (symbolized by the letter "MS") of the impeller at 1700 input rpm and at the specific point where input and output torque are equal. MS ratings indicate the converter's capacity and the higher MS value for a given series, the higher the capacity.

Torque Converter Application Chart - Weight

A hydraulic torque converter permits and engine to operate at nearly constant governed speed to develop maximum horsepower. The horsepower output from the converter is reasonably over a wide range of output shaft speeds. The comparative curves in the chart above are based on field tests of a mechanical hoist. Please note that two transmission ratios were used to cover the full range of converter operation with a single ratio.

The following chart indicates typical performance characteristics based on a name brand hydraulic torque converter. Applications should be engineered to achieve maximum efficiency when the output speed is one-third to two-thirds of input, paying attention that torque multiplication diminishes as output speed approaches input.

Single-Stage Hydraulic Torque Converter Renewal Parts Kits contain items such as bearings, shims, gaskets, clutch driving plates, gauges, "O" rings, seals, snap rings, piston rings, filer service kits, springs and miscellaneous small parts in one complete package.

For vehicle applications with power-shift transmissions we also offer sumpless single-stage converters with P.T.O. drives. Available in 11, 13, 14, 14.5, 16, 17.5, 18.5, 21, and 23" sizes. Capacities range from 40 to 1350 hp. Power take-off points provided for driving auxiliary hydraulic pumps. A modulating clutch to provide power dividing capability is available in most sizes.

Our standard marine transmissions feature helical gearing for quieter operation; hydraulic-operated and oil-cooled clutches for smooth, fast shifting; identical reduction ratios in forward and reverse, full power forward and reverse and minimal external plumbing.
